About the Small Business Development Center

The
Small Business Development Center (SBDC) was established by the U.S. Small
Business Administration in 1980, and Northland Pioneer College has been a
participant since 1989. The primary purpose of the program is to help increase
the number of successful small businesses in Northeast Arizona. The SBDC joins
ten such centers in Arizona---one of fifty participating states. Our primary goal is "working with small
businesses to maximize their successes" and we try to keep this in mind in
all that we do.

No Cost, Confidential Counseling
 The SBDC offers confidential, no-cost
counseling services. Clients may utilize counseling time as agreed upon
by the SBDC. As a client of the SBDC we guarantee that anything we discuss
will be held in the strictest confidence. Our counselors are experienced
in running a small business, and educated in business or their area of specialty.
Counseling sessions are opportunities to deal with specific problems, or
to obtain technical assistance with specific needs.
Areas of Assistance We Provide
- Financial Statement Analysis
- Access to Local Micro-Loan Funds
How We Evaluate Program
Effectiveness
To effectively assist a client with their business, we believe we
need to spend at least five hours working with them on their problem
or project. We translate "success" into meaning the creation of new or
retained jobs; helping with a business turnaround; obtaining loans,
new capital, or a line of credit; increased sales; and successful
start-up. Annually we survey clients who have received five or more
hours of counseling. When surveyed we hope that a client would respond
YES to the following questions:
- I am satisfied with the services provided
- The service has had a positive impact on my business
- I would recommend the SBDC to others
In that situation, we take credit for assisting with a clients' "success". We annually recognize clients that have been successful, and nominate a "Success Award Winner" for statewide recognition.
Seminars and Training
The SBDC hosts and co-sponsors seminars that deal with the concerns of
small, growing and start-up businesses. Topics regularly offered include:
We also offer in-depth programs
dealing with issues relevant to our service area, including;
Small Business Training Program
The SBDC offers classes at each campus on small business topics, such
as business startup, writing a business plan, marketing, legal & insurance,
and others. Our Small Business Training Program is a new 3-credit class
that puts it "all together" for startup and new businesses.
